HAIR MAINTENANCE

There are a few things you can do on a regular basis that will improve the overall health and appearance of your hair, as well as a few things you can avoid. In general, here’s a few standards:

Brush your hair: Yep, the good old fashioned hundred strokes. This stimulates blood supply to the scalp, removes dead skin cells from the scalp before they can get infected, and distributes sebum over the hair shaft for moisturizing and protection. Bend over from the waist and hang limply while doing some of the brushing. Use a natural bristle brush or other gentle brush. Be careful and don’t hurry. Better to go slow and only get 30 strokes in, than go fast and risk breaking or pulling out your hair. Get into the habit of brushing your hair thoroughly before washing it.

Massage your scalp: Before you stop to groom and brush your hair during the day, make a point of doing a quick scalp massage first. Slip your fingers into your hair, and using just the pads of your fingers, massage in small circular motions over your scalp. Using your finger pads will keep you from breaking your hair, scratching your scalp and messing up your style too much. Then restyle, re-spray (if you use it) and go…

Break Day: Get into the habit of giving your hair a break once a week. It is not necessary to wash your hair every day (unless you are a teenager, have a dirty job or work up a real sweat every day). If you are over the age of 20, and do not have any rashes or infections (like dandruff), give your hair a break for a whole day. Pick a day where you normally do not go out, or just do housework and run errands. Do not wash with shampoo and do not heat style. If you just feel too grubby and must do something, after brushing your hair thoroughly to distribute the sebum, simply wet your hair, apply a little daily conditioner to the ends, rinse well, and then pull back into a “wet look” ponytail or bun. Give your hair a break from shampooing once a week, and whenever possible, from blow-drying and heat styling.

Conditioning Treatments: Unless you have very fine, limp hair, get into the habit of applying a deep conditioning treatment to your hair once a week. Deep conditioners are not the same as daily conditioners, and homemade preparations work really well. Coconut oil is especially good for hair conditioning. Brush your hair, wash it lightly, and then towel dry. Apply your deep conditioner and then wrap your head in a heated towel to open the hair cuticle and allow the conditioner to soak in. Leave for 10 minutes to half and hour. Then rinse thoroughly in warm water to remove the conditioner residue that remains, then cool water to close the hair cuticle. Rinsing your hair in cool water can be a little uncomfortable, but it can do amazing things for the appearance of your hair. It closes the hair cuticle close to the shaft, which increases shine and manageability, and helps to keep hair strong. A mixture of cool water and lemon juice is even better for shine and strength (a half of a teaspoon of lemon juice in two quarts of cool water is sufficient).

Daily Conditioner: Get into the habit of applying a daily conditioner to hair ends every time you shampoo. This will reduce slit ends, discoloration when coloring, damage when heat styling and reduce the need for frequent trims. Use a product designed for thermal styling if you frequently blow-dry, use a curling iron or hot rollers.

Haircuts: Get into the habit of getting your hair trimmed when it needs to be. Again, this reduces split ends and keeps excess weight off your hair (which can cause breakage). About once every 8 weeks is right for shoulder length or longer hair, once every 6 weeks for shorter styles.

Up-Dos: Yep, that’s right – if you have long hair and want to keep it that way – put your hair up when possible. I’m not suggesting you look like an librarian every day, but one of the reasons that women grew such long beautiful hair back in the “old days” is because they wore it up all the time. The weight of your hair can stimulate the start of the telogen phase. When hair is weighed down and very long, it stops growing and falls out, or simply breaks off. Putting your hair up frequently will keep that weight off the root of the hair. You can pin it up gently with bobby pins or a banana clip when running errands, doing housework, cooking dinner, doing yard work, messing around on your computer, watching TV, etc. Now, this depends on your hair style and hair length. If you have a short hairstyle, this step is not only unnecessary – it’s impossible. However, if you have shoulder length or longer hair, and want it to be as thick and healthy looking as possible, make it a point to put it up and keep the weight off your scalp. The other upside is that it will help keep the hair out of dinner.

How to Wash Your Hair

Believe it or not, there is a right way to wash your hair. Treat it like the finest silk! If you’ve ever made the mistake of running a pair of expensive silk hose through your washing machine, you’ll know what I mean.

Here a few tips for avoid causing any excess damage to your hair while washing it:

Let your hair hang naturally when you wash it; either standing in the shower or with your head leaning over the bath, or in a shampoo sink. NEVER – NEVER – NEVER – pile it up on your head to wash.

Wet your hair with warm water (not hot) to prepare it for shampooing. Keep the pressure on the showerhead gentle enough to avoid excess water pressure on your hair.

Pour shampoo into the palm of your hand.

Work the shampoo into a lather in your hand, and apply to your scalp. Work the shampoo into your scalp all over your head by massaging with your fingertips (not your fingernails). Move fingers from one area of your head to the other by lifting the fingers and then placing them elsewhere on your head. Do NOT drag them through your hair. Remember, hair is the most vulnerable to damage and breakage when it is wet. If your hair is particularly dirty or oily, you can work the shampoo through to the ends. If your hair is very dry or processed, you may just want to wash your scalp, and let the shampoo pick up any dirt or oil on the ends as it’s rinsed out.

Rinse hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Ensure that you allow it to hang naturally. You may spread it out gently with your fingertips if it’s long and needs extra help getting out the shampoo.

If you chose to use a rinse-out conditioner, this is the time. Unlike shampooing, apply conditioners to the ends of your hair, and if your hair is generally dry, apply the remainder on your hands gently to the roots. Repeat the rinse.

Towel dry gently. The new hair towel wraps are excellent, keep hair in place and aren’t heavy like a towel wrap so there’s less risk of breakage to your hair.

Once hair is towel-dried you can apply a leave-in conditioner.

ALWAYS comb wet hair with a wide-tooth comb- NEVER brush wet hair.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER sleep on wet hair – it is vulnerable when wet, and can break easily as you turn on your pillow. Even if it doesn’t break, it roughs up the cuticle and makes it look dull.

Air dry hair whenever possible.

With just a little care and attention, you can have the lush and lovely locks you deserve. Treat your hair like the finest silk and it will reward you with shine, body and brilliance.

Beauty Tips Secrets

Thinking about updating your hair style? It can be a difficult decision to make, especially if you have been riding your current do for a few years. We all have huge debates with ourselves about what hair style to go with when we finally decide to make a change; should I go shorter, longer, new color, highlights, who should do the cut, aaahhhhh! It can feel overwhelming at times because so much of the way we feel about how we look is bound up in our hair style – and it makes sense after all your hair frames your face and gives endless hints to others about who you are.

Changing Your Hair Style

Making the big decision takes guts, you have to commit to what you fear may be a terrible mistake and that you will come out the other end – Ugly!

The first thing to remember is that no matter what hairstyle you choose you will look different, not better or worse, and making changes is fun. This is an area to challenge yourself in and potentially a personal growth experience for you.

When to Change Hairstyles

It has been more than 3 years since you really changed the style of your hair

You feel like your life is stagnant whether it is your career, family, relationship, or money. Making one change often leads to others – start with your hair and see what happens.

Your fashion and your hairstyle don’t seem to match

If any one of these criteria match then it’s time to change that hair!

Now you are ready to decide on a new hair style, I admit it’s tricky and you can never be sure. My best advice for this phase of change is take no more than 1 week to decide, preferably no more than 48 hours. Chances are if you are thinking about changing your hair you have been thinking about it for a while. Sit down with a friend, a hair style magazine, your stylist or all three and hash out some ideas; then you’ve got to just do it.

The Best Hair Styles for Your Face Shape

As fun as it is to play around with different hairstyles, it’s important to remember that not every hairstyle that looks great on a friend, co-worker or celebrity will look good on you. The shape of your face can greatly determine whether a hairstyle works for you or works against you.

Determine your face shape?First of all, you need to figure out exactly what your face shape is. There are several ways to come up with this answer, some more scientific than others. Chose the method that appeals most to you:

The Tracing Method: Hold your face up to a mirror and trace around your face onto the mirror with lipstick. Pull your head away, and voila, Your face shape. This method tends to be clumsy and a little inaccurate.

The Towel Method: Cover your face with a thin towel or piece of cloth. This creates a simple blank outline to be viewed without your facial features to distract. Then ask a friend to tell you what shape your face is. This method allows for some interpretation but can still be pretty effective. If your friend’s not up to figuring it out alone, have her/him take a picture of you and then the two of you can discuss it together.

Beauty Tips – Eyebrow Shaping

Shaping your eyebrows is a great way to boost your overall appearance. You do not have to be a model to look great and shaping your eyebrows is a great place to start. Eyebrow shaping not only helps define the features on your face, but it can actually help you look and feel younger, as well as make the face look firmer at the same time. Having shaped eyebrows opens up your eye area, making your eye makeup even more enjoyable to wear.
Many people shy away from eyebrow shaping because they are afraid that they will either mess up or that it will hurt. However, you can minimize the sting and the chances of messing up if you know exactly what to do to perfect the art of eyebrow shaping.
Let’s Get Started!
Trimming
The first thing you will want to do is start trimming the excess hair from the eyebrows. This alone can help your appearance. To trim the eyebrows, you should use a small pair of scissors or a mustache trimmer that comes with a comb to help guide you along.
The key to trimming your eyebrows without making errors is to do this two ways. First, comb the hair on the eyebrows up towards your forehead. Any hair that reaches beyond that of the natural brow line should be trimmed. Then you want to do the same thing again, only this time combing down, and trimming again what reaches beyond that of the natural brow line. Do this on both brows.
Tweezing
To know exactly what hairs should be tweezed, there is a great little technique. If you have pencil eyeliner in your makeup kit, take it out and put it against the side of your nose vertically. This means that it should start mid mouth and be near the eye’s tear duct. It is at this point your eyebrow should naturally start. If it doesn’t and you notice any hairs on the opposite side of the pencil – away from the brow – tweeze these hairs. Do this for both brows.
For the arch of the brow, take the same pencil eyeliner and place it diagonally. The pencil should rest on the outside of the eye’s iris, the nostril, and the mid mouth. Here is where you want to be careful. This should be a gradual thing, you do not want to overdo it. You want to gradually tweeze a line from the start of the brow to the arch.
For the end of the brow, again place the pencil eyeliner in a diagonal direction from outside eye corner, crossing the nostril and mid mouth section. For hairs that reach past that point, tweezing is necessary.
Finishing Up
Once you have finished tweezing and trimming, if you place the same pencil eyeliner in a horizontal line from start to end of the brow, you should find a straight and perfect line on both brows.
There are other ways of shaping your eyebrows as well, such as threading or waxing, but for these methods it is advisable that you enlist the help of your favorite salon to avoid any mistakes or accidents.
If you think that shaping and trimming your eyebrows is now your cup of tea then you can visit a beautician. A professional will cost you a bit but you wont have to worry about looking weird if you mess up. On the other hand it always pays to practice, so practice as much as you can and you will finally be able to shape your eyebrows like a pro. The tips mentioned above simplify the process of shaping and trimming your eyebrows. You need to remember never to exert too much pressure on your eyebrows or it can result in swelling.
Our suggestion is to save money and do it yourself, after all how knows your face better than you do?

Beauty Tips – Hair Shampoo Basics

Shampooing your hair is the most common and effective way of keeping your hair clean. Most experts recommend that you shampoo your hair every day. Shampoo actually helps eliminate the dirt and germs that may have gathered in your hair during the course of the day. However the shampoo you pick will purely depend on your scalp type. There are many types of shampoos available to choose from so a good starting point would be to actually know your scalp type and pick a shampoo accordingly.
Shampoos are designed to clean the hair of dirt, oils, skin particles, dandruff, environmental impurities and other contaminants that build up in hair. The liquid shampoo is combined with water and massaged into the hair and scalp. Lather is generated with helps clean the hair shaft, scalp, and ends. Shampoo manufacturers are constantly offering new and innovative shampoos for a wide variety of hair types and conditions. There are daily cleansing shampoos which contain mild ingredients and are used to remove build up of dirt, styling products, and other debris. There are shampoos engineered for color-treated hair, which prevent color from fading and provide extra conditioning agents that treat dry, overstressed hair.
Shampoos are also available for normal hair, oily hair, and fine hair. There are shampoos which boost volume and increase strength and hair elasticity. There are shampoos that promote shine and manageability for hair types that are coarse or tend to be frizzy and for naturally curly and permed hair, which helps maintain the integrity of the curls.
Shampoos sometimes will be combined with a conditioner ingredient. These are known as “2 in 1″ formulas. Shampoo manufacturers even cater to children. Large selections of products are available specifically for infants and children and often provide a mild shampoo which does not irritate the eyes. These are known as tearless shampoos. Kid shampoos usually come fruity-scented and in brightly designed containers. Some shampoos are even colored; however, they do not stain the natural color of the hair itself. For older children and adults, there are shampoos specially formulated to maintain and bring out the tones and highlights of hair’s natural colors for blondes, brunettes, redheads, and hair that has matured to gray or white.
There is emerging technology for the over-the-counter treatment of such issues as dandruff, scalp problems, and head lice which are available in shampoo form. For more severe issues, medical intervention and prescription shampoos may be required. Several manufacturers have begun using sunscreen as an ingredient in shampoos to protect the hair from sun damage. Alopecia (hair loss), baldness, and thinness are sometime treated with specialty or prescription strength shampoos which promote thickness and encourage hair growth. Swimmers who have lighter colored hair find frequent exposure to chlorine and other pool chemicals turn their hair shades of green. There are several shampoos available which cleanse the chemicals out of the hair, restore the natural color, and recondition the hair.
Shampoos are a one stop solution to all your hair problems, ranging from hair lice to dandruff. But it is imperative that you pickup a shampoo that suits your hair, experimenting with new brands and products is a good idea just so that you know which other products can be used. In the end it all boils down to actually buying a shampoo that really works for you.

Beauty Tips – Styling Tools – Which Hair Brush?

We all know about the various styling products available in the market today, ranging from hair straightening creams to coloring kits. However there are also many styling tools available too, that should make your styling life easier. As with everything else these tools are designed to make your life easier, and perfect the hairstyle you want.
You will hear it said many times over, that when it comes to hair styling products, the choices are vast. You will also hear it said many times over that everything you choose should depend on your hair type, your preferences, and your style. When it comes to hair styling tools, it is no different. You have a wide variety of choices. It is never easy choosing which styling tools you should be using. However, with our help, we hope that you will at least understand the different tools and their various uses to help us achieve our distinct hairstyle.
Hair Brushes
As the years go by, styling tools get more and more technical. We see new inventions, new discoveries, and new ways to save us time and money to get the hairstyle we are working for. The following are the various styling tools that both men and women use everyday.
The Differences
If you thought choosing a brush was easy, you are going to be surprised. It is not as simple as picking out one brush and that is that. No, now of hair accessories you have many different types to choose from.
? Round Hair Brush – Round hair brushes are not for everyone, particularly those with curly hair. These brushes are meant to add body and curls to the normally straight hair. They are also great for speeding up the time it takes to blow dry, thanks to the clever little holes. However, be careful with these, if not used properly, trust me, they become tangled in your hair quite easily; getting them it out is the hard part.
? Paddle Hair Brush – These can be large or small, depending on preference and coverage area. These typically have small to medium bristles.
? Picks – These are for curly to permed hair, never try to use a regular brush on permed hair, unless you want the perm to come out and extremely uneven at that.
? Combs – Typically, men and women with fine hair can get away with using combs. Some women, even those with thick hair, will use a comb for parting in specific spots or separating layers for styling.
No matter what type of brush you are choosing, you want to keep a few things in mind. First, use hair brushes that have a good handle, which will allow you to keep your grip and keep it tight. Next, look at the bristles on the brush, choose those which are fine and small, this will prevent tearing of the hair.
So the next time you are looking to change the style of your hair you know what tools to pick. The right tool will help you along your journey perfectly. Be sure to only buy products sold by reputable brands. Some of the well known brands should be sought as they are the best. These tools discussed above provide you with almost unlimited styling options, you can change the look of your hair within a few hours, no problem at all.

Simple Tips to Restore your Confidence in your Hair

If you are looking for treatment for your damaged hair that has been troubling you, all you may need is a return to the basics. A few minutes spent every day in caring for your hair, a slightly different lifestyle and using natural products may make more of a difference in returning your hair to its healthy best than you thought possible. Whatever you may have thought of her as a teenager, the tips your mother gave you are still as valid today as they were then. Read on to learn simple things to improve your damaged hair.

Keep those Chemicals away: Reduce the use of chemicals as far as you can. Artificial colors, synthetic shampoos, imitation dyes are all very harmful for your hair and may lead you to premature grey hair. Use the correct shampoo for your type of hair, and try to use nature based products for the best results. Alternatively, pull out that recipe book from the attic and use some of the home-products for hair care, for a cheap and efficient cure for your damaged hair.

Keep them Nourished: In their eagerness to have flowing locks, most girls forget to give the hair their due nourishment. Hair is like other parts of your body, it also needs nutrition. The best nutrition possible is a healthy and balanced diet, and avoidance of fast foods like French fries. For local nourishment, use a good massage of hot oil at least once a week to keep your hair in shape. The oil gets absorbed in the scalp and passes on the hair through the roots. Olive oil is considered to be the best, followed closely by almond oil and coconut oil.

Drink Plenty of Water: You may have been sick of your grandmother telling you to drink more water all the time, but the fact of the matter is that her advice still holds true. The human body is composed mostly of water, and so are the cells of your hair. Like your skin, your hair also needs lots of water to remain supple and pliant.

Wash it down: Had a typical bad hair day? Never mind. Massage you hair with good hair oil and leave it on for at least an hour to let the roots soak it in. Follow it up with a warm water shower with a mild shampoo to get your hair back in shape. Use a good conditioner to reduce the harsh impact of the cleansing, and let the hair dry naturally (driers are bad for your hair). Avoid using any chemicals or hair styling gels for a couple of days to let your hair regain its strength. Voila! Your hair is back to normal!

Choose good Hair Accessories: Quality always counts. You may have saved a few pennies by buying a cheap brush, but the damage it will cause to your hair is likely to cost you a packet at the hair restoration clinic. Go for quality hair accessories like shampoos, conditioners, colors, brushes, oils and the like. Natural products are always better for your hair, and their use will avoid your being troubled by such minor irritants as dandruff and hair loss .

It wasn’t that difficult after all, was it? Some changes in the products you use, and the way you use them, could make the difference between your having a mop of the best hair anyone could dream of, and continuing those never-ending visits to the hair restoration clinic.

Best of luck with your new-found confidence!

6 Steps To Healthy Hair By Jerrold D. Bass

Precision cut bobs are one of the hottest trends in straight hairstyles right now. Add to that some sleek styling, a blunt fringe and the right finish, and your bob will shine! Bob hairstyles show up in lengths all the way from ear level to shoulder skimming and usually work the best for clients who have naturally straight or slightly wavy hair. According to Jerrold D. Bass, a great stylist will specifically craft a cut to complement an individual clientâ??s unique facial features. These days, looking good is more important than ever, so if you want to look your best, there are loads of great products around to help you get the best results from your bob. Follow these five tips from Jerrold D. Bass and youâ??ll leave the house feeling and looking great! Beautiful Hair Tip #1The foundation for healthy hair is to use the right kind of shampoo. You need to invest in a high quality salon shampoo that matches your hair type. Jerrold D. Bass recommends Paul Mitchell products. If your hair has been colored, make sure that the formulation of your shampoo is right for you. Everyoneâ??s hair is unique. If yours tends to be oily, fine, or if youâ??re a blonde or a brunette, check in with your stylist for advice on what kind of shampoo to purchase. Donâ??t be like the majority of people who grab an inexpensive product from the local supermarket shelf and hope for the best, when what they really need is a high quality shampoo specifically formulated for their hair type.Beautiful Hair Tip #2Once youâ??ve got clean hair, the next step is to make sure itâ??s deeply conditioned on a regular basis.  Hair conditioners are formulated to add body to your hair, to remove unwanted frizz and to add shine. As an example, you know how unpleasant and scratchy your clothes become when you forget to use a fabric conditioner sheet in the dryer. Hair reacts in much the same way. A quality conditioner also tends to keep hair static free, which contributes to the reduction of frizziness even more. When you apply the conditioner, massage it in from root to tip and leave it on for the recommended time before rinsing it thoroughly. Then enjoy your new, shiny, healthy-looking hair! Beautiful Hair Tip #3Most people use a hair dryer to style their hair. Modern hair dryer technology causes less harm to hair these days, but be very cautious when using the dryer on a high heat in order to get your hair dry quickly. Jerrold D. Bass recommends that you keep the dryer moving over your head and dry hair evenly in order to avoid damage. If you have the time, itâ??s always better to use a hair dryer on a cooler setting.Beautiful Hair Tip #4If your hair is very wavy or curly, itâ??s critical to use a good hair-straightening device.  Most people find that the cheap flat irons do a poor job; so going for quality is well worth the extra money. A less expensive iron may not get hot enough to flatten the hair properly on a single pass. Or it may not be slippery enough to allow the hair to pass through smoothly, causing snags and breakage.  Choose ceramic or glass heating plates, and make sure that there is an adjustable temperature. Ceramic plates help to discharge the static electricity from your hair too, and youâ??ll most likely find that your hair will stay straighter for a longer period of time.Beautiful Hair Tip #5Finally, Jerrold D. Bass encourages his clients to make healthy choices in their diets. As with the rest of our body, hair is nourished by what we eat and drink, and it will never look healthy if we neglect to consume a healthy diet with lots of vitamins and minerals. Human hair is mostly made up of protein, so make sure your diet includes plenty of protein. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water each day will flush impurities out of your body and keep your hair (and you!) looking itâ??s healthy best.Guest contributor: Jerrold D. Bass is a Master Haircutter in the Greater Ft. Lauderdale, Florida area. Jerrold D. Bass is recognized as a master at color and is regularly sought out for corrective color as well.

Beauty Makeup Tips in Summer

January 24th, 2010 hair extensions pro No comments

In Summer, the light from the sun is stronger than ever and so any imperfections on our faces may be highlighted more than in winter or in darker light.

However, it is essential in summer that you actually lighten your make up rather than increase it. If you cake on the make up in summer it will be visible for all to see and look quite stupid.

Furthermore, the heat of the sun may literally melt your face! with the result of not only looking bad but having a bad effect on your skin too.

Thus, stick to a little shimmering powder and highlight your eyes, maybe a little lipstick but otherwise leave as is.

Summer is not the time to pile on the makeup or whip up elaborate hairstyles. So, do I go bareface and pull my hair up into a knot every day to stay cool? I wish I could, but few of us can get away with that. So, here is a list of my favorites.

· First of all comes the sunblock. I never go out the door without a little protection. My face is already thanking me for that!

· While I might not apply a foundation, I do need a little color on my cheeks. I find that stains or blush creams give just the right amount of color and it looks natural.

·There is nothing prettier than seeing shiny hair on the beach and nothing worse than seeing long, dull, tresses. But it takes a little work. The sun is hard on your hair too. Condition well and use products especially formulated for the summer sun.

· I can get away without eye shadow, but I do need eye liner. And because I have oily lids, I always prep the lid. There is nothing worse that eye liner that has smeared. Not a pretty site. BTW, most cosmetic companies offer great products to prevent your eye makeup from melting.

·Heavy lipsticks aren’t for summer either. Look for something sheer. I often mix my lipsticks with a little petroleum jelly. It softens the color and offers great shine too.

· Polish those toenails, and while you are at it, make sure that your heels are free of dead skin. You might not notice it, but everyone else will.

· Keep your eyes open for little summer bags. I recently picked one up that was part of a set from Victoria Secret. Have you checked out their fragrances? Now, I not only smell good, I have a great little bag as well!

Another more helpful tips

Use a waterproof eyeliner for lasting power. You can also moisten your favourite shadow with water and apply it to your lash line.

Wear waterproof mascara to eliminate smudges under the eyes.

When it comes to cheeks, apply a stain to the apple to create a long-lasting effect.

Finish your look with the bronzer of your choice.

Once you apply your lipstick or gloss, place a tissue over your lips, run your finger across the paper and then remove the tissue. This will help to get rid of the excess but will not take away the pigment. Last but not least, have fun with your makeup. If you make a mistake you can always start again.
